(Excerpt from Rockford Register Star) WASHINGTON — U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials promised Tuesday to gather information on what temporary repairs to the Aldeen Dam would keep it from failing in a repeat of the heavy rains that inundated Rockford on Labor Day, a spokesman for Sen. Dick Durbin said.
The 64-year-old earthen dam in Reuben Aldeen Park along Alpine Road no longer meets federal standards, but held up during the Labor Day floods.
Attention now turns to more potential flooding! Computer models now showing an ominous scene for the Upper Midwest for Friday. The problem with this storm is the fact that Gulf Moisture will be in plentiful supply. Low pressure #1 will move from the Texas panhandle to SW Minnesota by Friday morning. Low pressure #2 will develop in the Southern Plains and spread more rain into the Midwest for Saturday and Sunday.At least these storms aren't bringing any surges of Canadian cold. While temperatures will be cooler than normal due to cloud cover, highs will still be in the 60s for much of the Upper Midwest.
