The image on the left is a Visible Satellite image taken at about 1:30pm on Friday, December 1st. Not only can visible satellite pick up the clouds, but it is also a great way to identify where snow has fallen. And you can easily see where the fresh, new pack of snow fell across the Midwest (outlined in the black).
When trying to identify snow from a satellite image, you want to look for what's not moving. When the image is put in motion, the clouds will move with time. However, snow will not move. Also what I want to point out with this is, notice the sharp back edge of where the snow fell. It goes through central Illinois right through the extreme northwest portion of Illinois.
