Blizzard Warnings Now in Effect

A Blizzard Warning has been issued for most of the WREX-TV viewing area. Heavy snow with winds in excess of 35mph can be expected from Saturday afternoon through midday Sunday for areas shaded in red. Snowfall totals may exceed 12" in some locations. Do not travel unless you have four wheel drive and a winter survival kit.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Whiteside, Lee, and DeKalb County. Along I-88 there could be some icing which will hamper travel. In addition, 6-12" of snowfall is expected across the area. -ERIC

So I am wondering, I live in Durand, or outside of Durand, more than likley around 2pm this afternoon it will begin @ this time, and so it will be allright to get to Rockford where I work, on the East Side of Rockford, coming home @ Midnight though, more than likley I would not make it without four wheel drive, Should I stay home because of the bad weather that we will be getting overnight this evening or should I try to make it to work? This is something that work places should let there employees to decide if they should go to work or they should stay home, I rather stay home where I feel safe than even going out this weekend what so ever! -Garry-

Does this mean that the ice storm probably won't happen in the blizzard warning areas?

Snow can be shoveled but ice knocks down power lines.

On your digital channel, 13-1, none of the weather break-ins happen, so we are unable to be alerted as to what is happening. Please alert the technicians

Will updated snow total estimates be up soon? I believe some updated models are in..

Went food shopping (lines not too bad) & gased up the car this morning. Winds already whipping up the snow that fell last night, especially outside of town.

The most amazing thing about this weather is that it feels positively ominous. Not sure what contributes to that; probably some combo of wind, low clouds, barometric pressure change, who knows what else.

But y'know, even if I didn't have access to a single measurement or gauge or forecast or satellite image or any of that stuff - it would still feel like something really nasty blowing up.

That's the kind of thing that makes weather so fascinating.

we will begin our storm coverage later this afternoon. icing will be a possibility for a few hours this afternoon...especially south of HWY 20. -ERIC

Mike said...

how much snow will do you think that central belvidere will get get?

Anonymous said...

wow, blizzard warnings..

I cant even remember the last time our area was under one. Can anyone else?

And thanks for the coverage Eric!

Anonymous said...

wheres the snow? im in belvidere

Anonymous said...

how much snow in belvidere? there has been no updates.

Anonymous said...

is it going to miss us again? possibly doing the old rockford split?

Anonymous said...

the blizzard warning only says 6inches now are the totals dropping eric?

Anonymous said...

guys if you wanna see where the snow is at, look at an online weather radar.

no way this will miss us.

Anonymous said...

ya no kidding this precipitation stretches all the way back to southern kansas!!!

Anonymous said...

hey eric one quick question...is this storm coming together as u expected????

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I am wondering the same thing, is the storm coming together has it's being said on the computer models and what you have thought it would be doing, or is it going even slower than it was orginal plan?

Anonymous said...

I happened to be caught last night in the little bit of snow we received and it was awful. There were moments of white out type conditions with the blowing. I can only image what it is going to be like for the next 24/36 hours.

I agree with another blogger, as advanced and great that weather technology is, I think irregardless you just have a feeling something bad is going to happen.

Garry ~ STAY HOME! Better safe than sorry.

Take Care everyone.

Justin said...

The airport is reporting fog... which is odd because I don't see any. And its sleeting lightly right now... so thats great... just taking away from our snowfall total.

Anonymous said...

Did the storm lose some of it's strength or is it not going to hit us head on like predicted? Because I looked on the NOAA weather website and they do have the blizzard warning for our area but are only calling for 2-4 inches of snow and an additional inch on sunday.

Anonymous said...

Getting here @ 2:10pm on this Saturday afternoon some freezing rain right @ this time in Durand,IL, I will keep you posted from up here!

Justin said...

The blizzard warning isnt in effect until 4... so just calm down for a little bit... we still have a few hours.

Anonymous said...

No one needs to calm down. I think we all know it doesn't take effect until 4:00 p.m. That doesn't matter. The weather changes every 5 minutes around here. The snowfall amounts changed according to Noaa. It went from up to 12' down to 2-4' total. With one inch predicted for sunday because

" A MIX OF FREEZING RAIN SLEET AND SNOW WILL AFFECT
NORTHERN ILLINOIS AND NORTHWEST INDIANA LATER THIS AFTERNOON
THROUGH MONDAY. FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET WILL BE THE PREDOMINATE
PRECIPITATION TYPES"

And I was wondering if Eric was going to come out and say the same thing!

Justin said...

I know about that... Im saying because everyone is wondering where its at and why it isnt started.

Anonymous said...

Well our blizard warning has now been reduced to a winter storm warning.. for whatever it's worth..

According to the radars we should be getting snow.. so im guessing the air is too dry currently, and it isn't reaching the ground.

Anonymous said...

iknew it 2-4 inches now what adifference from 10-16

Anonymous said...

You are right. They cancelled the blizzard warning. They will probably cancel the winter storm warning too by the time 6 p.m. rolls around. That wouldn't surprise me.

Justin said...

It hasnt even started snowing in freeport yet. This is pathetic.

Anonymous said...

i cant believe there has been no updates the day of the horrific 2007 1-3 inch snow storm. you guys yesterday were breaking in all day nothing today

Anonymous said...

your headlines still say blizzard warning IS ANYBODY THERE?

Anonymous said...

Very pathetic. And not to mention people cancelling plans, getting to the store etc.. because of this "huge storm" that was predicted. I guess we should of known better. How many times has a big storm been forecast only for it to become nothing?

Justin said...

I think mother nature is wussing out on us!

Mike said...

When are we going to get a update?!

Mike said...

When are we going to get a update?!

Anonymous said...

This is one storm where they were way off. Up to 14' down to 2-4 if even that. All in a matter of a couple of hours.

john said...

It's snowing very lightly here in southern Ogle county near Dixon.

Eric Sorensen said...

the storm is progressing as anticipated. At 1:30pm, Burlington, Iowa had 1 1/2" of ice. A spotter reported that at least half of the branches of most trees had snapped off.

The heaviest freezing rain and sleet will fall in Jo Daviess, Carroll, Whiteside, and Stephenson County within the next few hours.

As night falls, the wintry mix will switch to snow.

The going forecast stands as is right now. -ERIC

I THOUGHT 13 YOUR CAST WAS UP TO THE MINUTE IM CANCELLING IT REMINDS ME OF WIFR23 WEBSITE A DAY BEHIND VERY DISSAPOINTED ERIC YOU SAIDYOU AND CANDICE WERE WORKING IN THE LAB WELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL?

Anonymous said...

Hey you guys, Chill. Its a relatively small station.

They have 3 meteorologists: Eric, Adam and Candy.

They have to schedue their work hours so they don't croak.

They don't normally have a meteorologist in-house on Saturday mornings. They said they'll be in later this afternoon. Give 'em a break.

Anonymous said...

They will probably wait until the news comes on at 6 p.m. and let everyone know then. Why even have this waether blog if they are not going to keep it updated throughout the day!

Anonymous said...

You all need to chill out. the weather team is on top of this storm, they dont have time to respond to every one of our comments....theyll let us know whats going on when they know.

Weatherteam: you guys are the best around! keep doing what youre doing!

Eric Sorensen said...

The NWS in Romeoville reduced the blizzard warning to a winter storm warning. For the reasoning: put this link in your browser

http://www.crh.noaa.gov/product.php?site=lot&product=afd&issuedby=lot&glossary=1

I will post a radar on the blog shortly.

We're not going to blow out programming until there's an imminent threat of severe weather. -ERIC

Justin said...

To the person complaining about 13 yourcast. If it was up to the minute, you would be complaining because you would be receiving to many e-mails. Eric, Candy, and Adam actually have lives. Do you think they're completely ignoring the situation? Well you're wrong. Just relax... He said the forecast hasn't changed, so why should he post updates?

Anonymous said...

WHERE IS ADAM ? WHERE IS ERIC ? WHWRE IS CANDICE? WHWRE IS ERIC NEFSTEAD?

Anonymous said...

If the sotrm is progressing as expected Eric, why is the blizzard warning cancelled? How much snow are you predicting now?

Anonymous said...

To the previous poster, Eric Nefstead is on WTVO not WREX!

Anonymous said...

IM IN BELVIDERE AND IM GOING TO START GRILLING OUT BECAUSE ITS NOT GOING TO DO ANYTHING

Anonymous said...

IT STILL SAYS BLIZZARD WARNING ON THIS PAGE WHY?

Hey, dude with the 'tude:

Hit your caps lock key & turn off the caps. Your ignorance is showing.

Anonymous said...

i think it will go west and north

Anonymous said...

is this a shovel event or a snowblower event?

Justin said...

Hopefully a no-work-tomorrow event

Anonymous said...

If you would like to see real time what is happening north of Durand, go to cam1.keenelandfarms.com.

Don't hog the cam, only 10 viewers allowed at once.

The cam is 10 fps, pointed west.

If it gets to loaded, I will shut it down, so don't pass this url around.

that camera is cool but isee no weather action

Justin said...

Itll be cool once the snow starts.

john said...

Heavy snow now in southern ogle county near Dixon. Give Eric a break, he does a great job. None of you lived through the John Coleman day's in Chicago I'll bet.

Anonymous said...

no snow in belvidere yet

john said...

Should have left the blizard warning for Ogle county because it looks like it now. Heavy snow and blowing. 1/16th. mile visability at best. Also temp dropped to 28.

Justin said...

It has to last for 3 hours to "officially" be considered a blizzard
