Pulse of Winter Tonight

A cold front is passing through the Northern Illinois region this evening. The air remains unstable out ahead of the front as thunderstorms develop as close as Lee County, IL (4:30pm). The front will slowly progress to the south overnight as the batch of cold rain over Wisconsin sags south.

Colder air will filter in overnight...as this takes place the rain over Wisconsin will become snow as it moves south. While it won't snow for a prolonged period, we could see a quick 1-3" of accumulation. The afternoon GFS model shows the snow-potential area. One thing that the model doesn't take into account is the warm weather we've had. It was 74° yesterday and 64° today. A lot of the snow that falls should melt, but don't be totally surprised if we get some low-visibility moderate snow after midnight, before 4am. Be careful on the roads if this happens! More to come. -ERIC
