Temperatures are expected to fall into the middle 30s by morning. The University of Arizona-Tucson has a great little
pamphlet (in Adobe Acrobat form) that details what you should do to protect your plants in this excessive cold.
Tonight at six, I said not to use plastic coverings because it prevents air circulation. Avid viewer, Lindi Anderson, sent me an E-Mail with a correction! She says "I owned and operated my own Plant Nursery In Florida for 12 years and as a result became very proficient in what is and is not good with regards to freezes. Living in Tampa we had to contend with them at least once a winter if not more.
The real reason you should not use plastic is it transfers the cold. Think about getting into a car in the winter with vinyl seats versus cloth seats. The temperature on your tushy is dramatically different. Where the plastic touches the plants can indeed do MORE damage than if nothing was used at all. The use of cardboard and or cloth is very much correct. I know you told the viewers not to use plastic which again is correct the main thing is the reasons need tweaking."
Thanks Lindi for the E-Mail and the keen insight! -ERIC
