Cool, high pressure will work directly overhead Friday morning. Temperatures are expected to fall into the upper 30s areawide...but how could we get frost if temperatures down get down to 32°? The National Weather Service's official placement for thermometers is five feet above the ground. In the lowest five feet of the atmosphere, we can actually get temperatures up to five degrees colder. Now, if you're in a valley, you can see even colder temperatures. So, when we show a Rockford Metro temperature of 37°, some areas in protected valleys could be as low as 30°.
Adam and I will continue to watch the forecast closely. If frost becomes more likely for Thursday night/Friday morning, we will offer you some tips to keep your plants and garden safe from the cold. -ERIC
