With the summer solstice right around the corner, I thought I would take a look at why the North Pole is in the midst of many night-less days. First of all, the farther south you are, the longer the night. This is because the sun will be shining directly onto the Tropic of Cancer which is about 23°N latitude.

So, you think that Orlando is the sunny place to be in June? Think again! Any place south of Rockford has a longer night. On Wednesday, our sun will rise at 5:19am and won't set until after 8:30pm. Another thing to think about: Because we're on the eastern fringe of the Central Time Zone, Lincoln, Nebraska has more daylight in the evening and we have more daylight in the morning.
Anyway you cut it, Orlando's sub-14 hour day can't compare to us. We're definitely the brighter place to be in right now. There is one caveat though: Come mid-December, we'll have days with only 9 hours of daylight. -ERIC

i never thought about that b4
This really is a slow weather week...
I was in northern wisconsin just this past weekend.. i thought my clock was broken when it was still pretty light out at 9
I believe july 1st is when the days start to get shorter. This is a very boring weather week. Just lots of sunshine and very warm to hot temps. Last week we were talking about a possible major severe weather outbreak which never panned out. And on the NWS webpage, they even said that northern illinois and northwest illinois dodged a major bullet with the severe weather last thursday. I guess if you are a fan of severe weather, then it is typical around here. I guess it happens when you are in a mini-drought mode.
I used to live in England and it was still pretty light out in June past 10.00pm..sunrise around 4.30am and sunset around 9.45pm I think.
