Going from heat to A/C in just a few days?

The graphic to the left shows the record high and low temperatures for September 15th to September 21st. The second graphic shows how my 7-day forecast compares to those records. It appears we'll shatter the record for early Saturday with a forecast low of 33°. What's so interesting is the fact that we go from unprecedented cold to near-record warmth! High temperatures on Wednesday of next week will be in the 85-90° territory...just a few degrees from record highs! -ERIC

Yeah - this time of year is partieularly tricky for those of us who try to heat and cool our houses "naturally" as much as possible. Just a few days ago I was working the doors and window shades to maximize cooling at night and minimize daytime heating. Now all of a sudden I'm in the opposite mode: trying to manipulate solar warming as much as possible to warm it up enough during the day so it doesn't get too cold at night. Definitely dusted off the warm blankets already. Looks like next week we'll be flipping storm windows up and the screens down again to try to cool it off at night.

Minimizing energy consumption is somewhat of an obsession of mine. If I can take a moment to brag, my gas & electric bills, which include heating, cooling, cooking, hot water & all appliances for a 100 year old 2 story house still only average about $1200/year ... but it definitely takes work, well placed trees, and careful attention to every possible heating & cooling possibility offered by Mother Nature in order to accomplish it!

Nobody turned the heat on last night so when I woke up this morning it was 55 degrees in the house.
