One extreme to the other!

As we blogged earlier this month, August 2007 broke a record for the wettest month on record here in Rockford. September has taken us on a 180° turn. We've been extremely dry and warm. In fact, so far this month, 22 of the 29 days have been warmer than average. Back on the week of the ninth, we thought that autumn was here to stay. Boy were we wrong about that! After that frosty Saturday morning on the 15th, we made it to 90° three more times. Almost unprecedented for this time of year!

We'll remain above normal for a week...but when do you think the cool weather will finally get here?

I love this warm fall weather. Every day that the temp stays above average I can feel my winter heating bill drop.

Mmmmmmaaaaaahhhhhhh....

True! I don't think I have had the heat on but twice!

Hey Ladies & Gents, this is the time of year when careful attention to solar heating can easily cut your energy bills by a LOT. And you don't have to go out any buy any fancy or expensive solar heating gizmos either.

Main tools are: windows, curtains, screens, storms, window calk and trees.

As those trees start dropping leaves maybe a little more sun comes in some of those windows, yes?

Make sure the windows are squeaky clean, no dust and fingerprints blocking the light. Close the screens, calk around the edges, make sure nothing but pure warm sunlight is coming in every possible window at every possible opportunity. Then as soon as the sun goes down close all the drapes to keep the warm air inside from escaping outside. Open and close doors as quickly as possible, don't let the heat out that way.

If you're good at this little game (the solar heating game) and don't mind wearing sweaters around the house you can often avoid turning the heat on until well into October, sometimes even November.

And boy do those extra heating bucks come in handy in Jan and Feb when the sun is low & the air is cold and no sweater in the world will keep out the winter chill.

As happy as I was working, being a new mom is a full time job in itself and because of that, I have decided to stay home. It was a VERY tough decision, but my husband and I thought, at least for now, it would be for the best. I will miss doing the weather but who knows, maybe someday I'll get back into it. I wish everyone the best of luck and god bless.

Candy,
I too made the decision to stay home with my children when they were young. I am very thankful that my husband supported my decision and I enjoyed every minute with my kids. I am very happy for you and your family! God bless you~~~
