Skirts Not Recommended
Here is a look at the peak wind speeds expected for each 12 hour period over the next 60 hours. A very strong area of low pressure north of Lake Superior coupled with a very strong area of high pressure over Montana has caused the pressure gradient across the upper Midwest to tighten. You can compare it to when a large river moves through a shallow (rapids-like) area. The large amount of water has to squeeze through a smaller volume, which causes the water to accelerate. This is happening when the cooler Canadian airmass tries to move south through the Dakotas.
Wind Advisories are running as I type for all of the Dakotas, Nebraska, and portions of Minnesota. Our winds won't be high enough to reach that criteria, but the conditions will still be quite blustery through Thursday around 10pm. That is when the atmosphere will relax and the strong winds will subside. -ADAM
