With another three weeks left in this climatological winter, the 2007/2008 season has a good chance to reach the top spot for the greatest amount of snow recorded! Here is the top ten:
- 63.4 Inches 1978/1979
- 56.5 Inches 2007/2008
- 49.9 Inches 1993/1994
- 48.9 Inches 1909/1910
- 47.3 Inches 1973/1974
- 46.4 Inches 1917/1918
- 42.8 Inches 1935/1936
- 41.0 Inches 1942/1943
- 40.3 Inches 1987/1988
- 40.2 Inches 1977/1978
We're only 7 inches away from setting a new record and I'd say that our chances are near 100%. Very light snow may add another 2-4 inches from tonight through Saturday night. A potential winter storm may affect the region on Tuesday/Wednesday with a 3-8 inch possibility. Add those snows up and we may be in record territory sometime next week...and that's only in the second week of February!

does monday's potential snow look like a decent amount??
I am going with a slower solution with snow for Tuesday/Wednesday. It appears there will be ample moisture. There's still some question as to whether it will stay as snow (and not mix with sleet or rain) but a storm potential is certainly there...as it looks now. -ERIC
Hey eric, I read in the RRstar today that la nina is still affecting us. Is that the reason we are seeing so much snow this winter. It said we have a weak to moderate la nina and that is what is giving us our very snowy winter. That will be unreal if we get another storm next week.
oh wow, and to think about it I was only 2 years old at the time when it hit! I can't remember much at that time being two but I recall the time being on that snow bank!
Funny you can remember things like that!
I see the storm? is off the projected forecast for Tues/Weds- did the projection change?
LET IT SNOW!!!!!!
Ok, it can snow next week, break the record, and then never snow again. Tell me Eric that you can control the weather :) Just put 50 degrees in the forecast, you never know. Just joking. I have my big graduate recital on the 23rd and people are coming in from out of town so I'm just hoping there are no snow storms around that time.
I'm also curious about what your opinion is on why this winter is so snowy. Or any of the weather people's opinions.
Figures....all those years I wanted snow - - - AND nothing. Great work on the blog and the website E!
Just wanted to say "Hi!" to Scott! You were great when you were in Rockford, and hope all is well out east!
I remember when you were here and mentioned about the snow being 'light' compared to average. And the 'rockford curse'. There's definately no curse lately, as the last year or so has been wild weather wise! :)
Haha I remember the curse. It was almost like we just had a big circle of dry around the city.
It's become the reverse-curse. ;)
How much snow are we going to get on Monday???
NWS-LOT just put out an interesting AFD, saying 0.2-0.3 QPF with areas of 6-9 inches in Far Northern Illinois On Monday/Monday night, snow ratios 20 to 25 to 1, this will be much like that 8.7 incher we received a few weeks ago with the very powdery snow... Looking at NAM/GFS models on Earl Barker's wxcaster we could see anywhere from 3-6 inches. We could get in 2nd place for all time annual Snowfall, if this occurs, being right behind 78-79 total of 74.5 inches. Wow, what a kick-but winter...
