Storm Verification

Let's do some snow verification (since we've gotten a little bit of flack recently regarding our snowfall forecasts).

I looked back at Justin Gehrts' Sunday 10pm forecast and he said "some areas could receive more than six inches." On Monday morning Adam Painter said "four to eight inches" and I stuck with that Monday night. Looking at the 8 inch report from Carroll County, IL and the widespread 4-6 inch reports from Northern Illinois I think our forecast worked.

Editor's note: I didn't plot all of the reports from the Chicagoland area as there were gobs of them in the 3-9 inch range.

Adam, Justin, and I worked together with our forecasts to make sure that one Meteorologist saw everything the other saw. Are we going to get every weather forecast right? Hardly! But I am sure I don't speak for just myself when I say I'll take this snow event to the bank!

*crickets chirp* .. I wish "adam" had the guts to come back here and try to defend himself.

I must say that I think you, adam and justin did a dang fine job trying to nail this down. It was hard to forecast since the models kept taking the storm further south. That is why I trust this forecast more than the NWS forecasts since their forecasts seem to base it out of what chicago might get also and not really take into account rockford. That is why I wish the rockford airport still had the the NWS like they did 15 years ago.

I think it's funny that you would get flack for your forecasts --it should be obvious to anyone that forecasting the exact number of inches of snow in any one place is impossible. All you have to do is think of all the variables, and if people are reading the blog, you've outlined those variables and explained how variations in the inches of snow might occur.

Plus, I think it's funny that we're all so interested (myself included) in whether we're going to get 4.2 or 5.6 inches of snow --we're such weather geeks!

I really enjoy this blog, and reading all of your thoughts on how the forecasts were put together and how they might change. Don't let a couple of cranks ruin it for the rest of us!

No need to justify. It's weather...enough said.

This is the only place I go to get my local forecast!
