Winter Storm Information

(8:50:29 PM) iembot: 4 Nnw Lanark [Carroll Co, IL] trained spotter reports HEAVY SNOW of E10.2 INCH at 08:20 PM CST -- storm total.

(7:35:40 PM) iembot: Janesville [Rock Co, WI] trained spotter reports HEAVY SNOW of M16.0 INCH at 07:25 PM CST --

7:00pm - Weather watcher in Beloit measured 20.0!

3:58pm - Spotter report of 12" of snowfall in Freeport as of 3:30pm.

3:47pm - We have had quite a few questions concerning the state of snow plowing in Winnebago and Rock Counties. I heard first hand by a Burritt Twp. plow that Winnebago Co. was pulling plows because of the blowing and drifting. I, for one, can tell you from experience that no one belongs on any roadways (outside any urban area). Shortly before 2pm there were three foot drifts on Auburn Road, west of Meridian. Not even four-wheel-drive can get you through that. Stay home unless it is an emergency, but only if you have 4WD. -ES

3:46pm -
(3:43:34 PM) iembot: 4 Sse Winslow [Stephenson Co, IL] trained spotter reports HEAVY SNOW of M18.0 INCH at 03:42 PM CST -- snowfall of 18.0 inches. still snowing.

2:00pm - Looking at the latest radar trends, the whole system is still departing relatively quickly. The back edge of the snow is now only a county or two into Iowa, and it appears some of the snow in northern Illinois is beginning to break up. I suspect there are two reasons for this: first, the upper-level energy is pushing ahead of the precipitation and no longer providing as much lift; second, some dry air is getting wrapped in at the upper levels, evaporating some of the snow before it can reach the ground. So, across portions of northern Illinois, the snow will become light for a while before the final band of snow slides through around 5-6pm. Otherwise, in southern Wisconsin, the snow currently looks to remain moderate to occasionally heavy until departing around the 6pm timeframe.

Wind will also still be a factor. We've been receiving reports of widespread blowing and drifting snow. Travel will be treacherous, especially on secondary roads. -JG

1:00pm - The back edge of the snow is finally starting to move east after sitting over the eastern half of Iowa all morning long. Visibilities continue to be very low. The accumulating snow should end in Jo Daviess County around 3pm, in Stephenson County around 4pm, and in Winnebago County around 5pm. The entire viewing area should see the snow stop by 7pm. (10:53:14 AM)
iembot: 4 Sse Winslow [Stephenson Co, IL] trained spotter reports HEAVY SNOW of M11.3 INCH at 10:54 AM CST -- still snowing heavily.

11:15am - Not much has changed in the way of weather conditions outside. A massive area of snow continues to engulf the Stateline viewing area. Latest data still shows an additional 1/4" of liquid precipitation during the afternoon hours. This most likely will dump another 2 to 5 inches on top of the snow that is already on the ground. The counties that continue to get hit the hardest include Jo Daviess, Stephenson, Green, and Rock County. The counties on the outskirts of the heaviest snow will be those farthest to the southeast including Lee and DeKalb County. The snow should remain heavy through 2pm. Snow will fall at a moderate pace between 2-4pm. Light snow can be expected to linger through 6pm, but the skies should turn mostly dry thereafter.

(10:32:45 AM)
iembot: Pearl City [Stephenson Co, IL] trained spotter reports SNOW of M8.5 INCH at 10:24 AM CST -- still snowing.

(9:23:35 AM) iembot: 3 E Woodbine [Jo Daviess Co, IL] trained spotter reports SNOW of M9.0 INCH at 09:23 AM CST -- still snowing. blowing but not much drifting.

9:00am - Widespread snow still being picked up on radar. A few heavy bands are embedded in this batch that extends from Des Moines to Milwaukee. Wind speeds areawide are between 15 - 30 mph out of the northeast. This is causing it to basically snow sideways and has dropped visibilities below one mile in most areas. As you can see below snowfall totals are becoming fairly impressive, and it appears as though the snow will continue into the late afternoon hours. Snowfall totals for most areas will approach one foot. Locations on a line betweeen Galena, Monroe, Janesville, and Milwaukee could very well break the 12 inch mark. We've had many reports of slick conditions in the metro area, but snowplows are doing an alright job keeping up. It is the outlying areas and rural roads that have barely been touched. Only drive if it is absolutely necessary today. -ADAM

6:15 am - Bands of heavy snow are making their way through the western part of the viewing area. Jo Daviess, Carroll, and Stephenson Counties are all experiencing this heavy snow. Additional bands of heavy snow will make their way across the area all morning. If you get under one of them, you'll have snowfall rates of 2" per hour. We're also seeing reports of thundersnow in eastern Iowa. I expect to hear about thundersnow in the Rockford area as we go through the morning. -JG

5:10 am - Currently sleeting outside WREX studios.

4:25am - Next batch of heavy snow has just crossed the Mississippi River and is affecting far western Illinois. This will move into the heart of our viewing area in the next hour. The morning commute is going to be a slow go with near white-out conditions in some spots.

3:00am - One batch of heavy snow is still sitting over the Stateline. In some of these bands the snow is coming down so hard that visibilities are near zero in some spots. This area of heavy snow is pushing off to the northeast, and we should see another lull in the activity around 4am. Our next wave of snow is stretching from Kansas City, MO to Cedar Rapids, IA.

1:30am - Moderate snow falling over the QC area at this time...Increasing in coverage and intensity. Snow just knocking on the door of Rockford. Snowfall rates around 1" per hour are likely through 4am.

Some thunder may accompany the snow, especially after 4am when the main system arrives and sticks around through 11am. -ES

11:30pm - Snow continues to develop along the Mississippi River at the bottom of the hour. Snow will form SW-NE bands which will produce 1 inch of snow per hour. Additionally, lightning strikes have been noted around Kansas City with the snow. This area of convection will arrive in NW Illinois by 4am. Updates at the top of each hour through the night...more frequently here on the blog. Thanks for stopping by. -ES

4:30pm - Meteorologist Justin Gehrts with this blog update... "Who?" is what you're probably thinking. I'm the new weekend meteorologist, joining Eric, Adam, and Gretchen. This is my second day on the job, so I'm getting thrown into the fire pretty quickly. We'll get to a more detailed introduction later, but for now, the important issue at hand is the still-developing winter storm. Traffic on State St. in Rockford crawled to 20 mph in the past hour due to that heavy burst of snow that just pushed through. Unfortunately, we won't see much of a reprieve as snow is expected to continue through the evening hours. A few folks, especially toward I-88, may see some sleet mix back in. Everybody will see hazardous road conditions continue. We'll be monitoring the situation all evening and all night - yes, we'll be here still at 4 a.m. - updating the blog, phone, and radio as needed. Eric will have all the latest at 5 and 6. -J

(4:26:35 PM) iembot: Stockton [Jo Daviess Co, IL] co-op observer reports HEAVY SNOW of M1.0 INCH at 04:28 PM CST -- snowfall since 230 p.m.

4:00pm - Here's a look at the NAM model that I mentioned earlier...indicates a potential for up to 16 inches.

3:45pm - Heavy sleet pellets reported in Dixon. Changed from heavy snow within the past few minutes.

(3:40:21 PM)
iembot: 4 W Huntley [Mchenry Co, IL] trained spotter reports SNOW of M0.8 INCH at 03:28 PM CST -- snow started at 205 pm. at 228 it started snowing heavily which it is still doing.

(3:16:29 PM)
iembot: Mount Carroll [Carroll Co, IL] trained spotter reports SNOW of M0.0 INCH at 03:00 PM CST -- moderate to heavy snow falling.

(3:16:29 PM) iembot: Sterling [Whiteside Co, IL] trained spotter reports SNOW of M1.0 INCH at 03:05 PM CST -- heavy snow falling.

3:15pm - Looking over the midday computer models, the amount of potential precipitation has gone up. The "NAM" model is giving us 1.59 inches of liquid (which using a 13:1 ratio where one inch of water yields 13 inches of snow). If that model was correct the total snowfall amount would be 20 inches. The "GFS" model is giving RFD 1.28 inches of liquid. Again, using the 13:1 ratio, that is around 16.6 inches of snowfall. Our 8-13 inch forecast is still holding for now, but may need tweaking this evening as the snow piles up.

3:01pm - Lee, Carroll, Ogle, and Whiteside Counties: Roadways becoming snow-covered.
Emergency Manager's Office in Dixon reports snow-covered, slick roads.

2:45pm - Sleet covering the ground at Franklin Grove, IL.
Snow in Rockford. Dusting reported south of town.

11:30am - Doppler Radar continues to show a mix of sleet, rain, and snow across Southeastern Iowa. Precipitation will move into the Rockford metro this afternoon with accumulating snow likely this evening and overnight.
10:30am - The most recent model guidance has come in, and this storm system still appears very rambunctious. This afternoon's precipitation is going to be very close to the rain/snow line. It appears as though the showers will still start during the middle of the afternoon. Look for it to begin as rain, switch to sleet briefly, before finally switching into snow. Once the type switches to snow, it will stay in that state during the remainder of the event. The amount of available moisture with this storm system is quite remarkable. Even if we squeeze as much as a quarter of an inch of liquid out of this storm this afternoon, there is still enough moisture in the atmosphere to reach our snowfall prediction. This snow event is going to be more of a heavy, wet snow just like the one that hit us the night of the Super Bowl. Ratios with this storm will be between 10 (inches of snow) to 1 (inch of liquid) and 12 to 1. With around 1 inch of liquid likely with this storm, you can do the math and realize that a major snowfall is imminent. The heaviest snow should occur from a line stretching between the Quad Cities, Freeport, and Milwaukee. This band could easily end up shoveling a foot of snow. The Winter Storm Warnings likely will stay in place with the combination of heavy snow and blustery winds. With a constant snowfall overnight, and drifting taking place, snowplow trucks will have a difficult time keeping up. Travel is not advised overnight, and Wednesday morning's commute will be treacherous. In the past, area schools have closed when we have received 6 inches of snow. With the potential with this storm to be twice that, look for many school's being closed tomorrow. -ADAM

5am - All areas have been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning. This will last from 6pm Tuesday through 6pm Wednesday.

MONDAY

10:30pm - Winter Storm Watch in effect for all of Northern Illinois. Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Southern Wisconsin. Snow will begin accumulating Tuesday evening into the overnight when accumulations of 8-13 inches are possible, especially across North-Central Illinois.

9:30pm - Dense Fog Advisories will continue through at least midnight. Winds should begin to rise above 10mph during the overnight. Visibilities will gradually improve.

8:30pm - Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for Central Illinois. Storms should stay south of I-80 through the night.

Dang looks like you're starting the winter weather coverage early.

Tonight when I was driving home realizing how foggy it was, a question came to my mind. How is visibility determined? Is it measured by an instrument or is it just an estimate?

Eric Sorensen said...

Justin: We're not going to post anything but the pertinent wx information so I figured we would go ahead and just post our thoughts on the short-term weather.

Visibility is estimated automatically by the reporting station both in the horizontal and vertical. Good question! -ES

Are the 9pm models still showing what you forecasted earlier, or has anything changed.

F5tornadomanF4 said...

Hey Eric,
I was wondering about the winds tommorow, do you think they will reach strong enough speeds for the storm to be classified as a "blizzard"? sometimes in these kinds of storms wind can make all of the difference in traveling. i saw earlier on your 5 and 6 forecast that the winds looked like 15-25 mph. Has that Changed?
Thanks,
Alec

Eric Sorensen said...

tony: no changes need to be made.

f5: in order for this to be considered a "blizzard" we would need 35 mph winds for a period of three hours. it remains to be seen if we can meet that criteria.

The Quad Cities and Chicago offices of the NWS will have to put out WSWarnings or BWarnings with their 4am packages. Adam will have those on the blog and on the air at 530am. -ES

Ill be sure to get up at 530 to find that one out...

But either way, I called a snow day for wednesday, yesterday. Im 4/4 on the year, hoping to make it 5/5. i haven't predicted one snow day yet this school year that turned out not to be either.

tony said...

I have a feeling when I get up in the morning to go to work at 7 we will have a WSwarning. That is my gut feeling. We will see. I have to give you credit eric, you were saying around wednesday of last week I believe it was, that we may have a major storm for tomorrow and looks like it might pan out. You rock.

Justin said...

Is it your birthday eric? I noticed the balloons in the weather center. Didnt have volume on, so something might have been said but i missed it.

F5tornadomanF4 said...

thanks for the info eric, i'm going to go with justin on this one, although hononegah had to go to school last week when almost all of the other schools were out, i think this storm should spark a snow day. Hononegah and harlem, are infamous for least amount of snow days in a school year! lol

F5tornadomanF4 said...

keep in mind though everyone, while we are getting lots of snow, the spc is also calling for a tornado/severe thunderstorm outbreak in the south. i even heard it could get up to 80 degrees some spots tommorow as well!

tony said...

Actually justin, it is national weathermans day. I think that is what eric said at 6. And f5 is right, I don't think harlem believes in cancelling school regardless of the weather. Last week when it was -20 wind chill, harlem still had school.

Eric Sorensen said...

you all didn't get me anything for national weather person's day???

F5tornadomanF4 said...

so did hononegah, and unfortunatly that is where i go! lol

Justin said...

Ohhhhh... I thought that was TOMORROW! Yea I have your gift sitting right here.

So unfortunately i didn't catch Adams forecast this morning before i headed off to work and am hearing a lot of rumors on how much we are supposed to get. Can you put these rumors to rest for me? Thanks! Btw i like this blog idea!

Adam Painter said...

The National Weather Service is holding a conference call at 10am. Also, the latest model data should be coming in around that time. After I attend to these two tasks, I will post a discussion of my thoughts.

Drew, this morning I made only minor tweaks to Eric's forecast from last night. The potential for some areas to receive nearly a foot of snow still exists.

If you haven't voted yet, I suggest you get out there soon! The roads will start deteriorating this afternoon...

Emily said...

Adam, we're not looking at a huge amount of rain this afternoon, are we?

Alli said...

Does it look like Rock Valley could cancel classes tonight? We have GED classes here in town tonight which i can't make it anyways because i have to work but it will be a big relief knowing that i will not miss it if its cancelled. What is the best advice for businesses tonight? I work in Sullivans here in Winnebago and i don't have a far drive but do you think most places like this will be smart and let their employees go home early? They close at 10pm and i get off at 9pm. Is it going to be bad at that time or is it mainly in the overnight timeframe?

Eric Sorensen said...

Wasabi: Up to 1/4 inch of rain may precede the snow. We'll really get an idea of what happens here as the liquid precip mixes with sleet and snow over Southern Iowa in the next hour or two.

Heavy snow will be of great concern this evening and overnight as some areas may receive 12 inches of snow. -ES

Wendy said...

WooHoo!! Bring on the snow!

Thanks for the answer Eric!

Seems we've skipped rain and went right to snow in DeKalb...

It is snowing like crazy in Belvidere, started around 2:30pm. There wasn't any rain - started with snow.

No rain here in Roscoe either...All snow, and snowing pretty hard.

tony said...

I know traffic on forest hills road and the riverside bridge is at a near crawl. It is very bad out there. I cannot believe we may get 16-20 inches. wow.

tony said...

Now with the main snow event set for tomorrow early morning, do you think it will clear by 330 or so, because I work at 4,so I am not sure if it will be ok to travel by then or if it will still be impossible if this snow materializes.

Justin Gehrts said...

3:30am ... I think conditions will be deteriorating by then.

3:30pm ... The heaviest snow ought to be winding down. However, we'll still have plenty of blowing and drifting, making travel dangerous. Let's hope most roads will be somewhat clear by tomorrow night! It'll be tough going for the road crews tomorrow.

tony said...

3:30 p.m. is what I meant. Sorry about that. I hope we do get this foot of snow. I know right now we have drizzle.

TV 13's Meteorologist Justin Gehrts (and the rest of the team), happy (late) weatherperson's day!

I am in Rochelle, not seeing much accumulation here. Just checked the NWS to see if there was a change in the winter warning. Looks like we are still in for another batch moving in. The winds are definitely howling. Looks like a lull in the system for the time being. How soon before the next band comes in?

Right now in loves park, heavy sleet pounding against my screen and 30mph wind. I have a feeling the sleet will cut down on the snow.

Hey adam, how do you think conditions will be around 3;30 this afternoon, I have to be to work at 4.

Tony: During the middle of the afternoon the snow should still be falling, but it should not be as heavy as it has been this morning. Road conditions will remain poor this afternoon. I don't expect the roadways to significantly improve until this evening.

Well, I work at an office supply store in town and they called us from the regional office in chicago to close up the store at noon.

It is definately whiteout conditions on my drive home from work, as I couldn't even see stoplights I was approaching (let alone the snow almost completely covering the lights itself). Alpine road had such deep snow on the road it was dragging under my car and pulling me away from going straight.
