Lack of Severe Weather Lately

The Chicago office of the National Weather Service recently compiled some numbers involving severe weather reports in their responsibility area which are fairly intriguing. Their coverage area includes northeastern Illinois and extreme northwestern Indiana. The counties in the Stateline viewing area that count towards the Chicago office include Winnebago, Ogle, Lee, Boone, and McHenry counties.

The numbers to the left reflect the amount of severe weather reports during the first six weeks of the "spring severe weather season." This timeframe involves March 1st through May 15th. That means the Poplar Grove tornado in January does not count on this list. As you can see the number of large hail, damaging wind, and tornado reports is down by a large margin compared to the average for the last five years.

The same cannot be said for the amount of tornado reports nationally. We are on a torrid pace with over 800 confirmed tornadoes across the country. That is more than double the average year to date pace. The complete article is linked here. -ADAM
