December has been kind to snow-lovers

For many years December really hasn't been a snowy month. On average we only get around 10 inches (see Adam's post below). Justin Gehrts and I looked back at the past ten years and found a dramatic increase in December snows. The graph to the left shows the amount of snow at the Chicago-Rockford Int'l Airport for only the first ten days of the month. For the past four years we're right up near our monthly average in only the first 1/3 of the month.

And there's surely more snow to come!

If I remember correctly in 2000, I think shortly after the 10th of december is when the pattern changed and we got a major snow then it seemed after that for the next two weeks we had bitter cold and kept getting systems that were producing 3-5 inches of snow. I think on christmas day, we had snow up to our window sill at our house.
