Different Kind of Snow Storm

With the massive system from last night finally moving on, we can now start to analyze the situation for this weekend. This next storm system is going to be just as intense, but for many different reasons.

First let's talk snowfall. The Gulf of Mexico is not going to be open for business with this piece of energy so moisture amounts are going to be limited. For travelers heading north into central Wisconsin, you will be driving into the heaviest snow which could amount to 3-4". I am only expecting an inch or two near the Illinois/Wisconsin border with some spots along I-88 picking up less than an inch.

The snow is only going to be coming from the clouds between 3pm and midnight on Saturday, but you will continue to see snow flying throughout your Sunday. That is because unlike this last storm, our winds are going to increase dramatically on the back side of this system. Northwesterly winds could be gusting up to 40 mph. With a foot of snow already sitting on the ground, that will provide plenty of ammo for blowing and drifting to occur. Visibilities could drop below one mile for drivers. If these winds come as advertised we could be talking about near blizzard-like conditions. Remember that snowfall amount has no bearing on a blizzard. It is merely defined by 35 mph winds and white out conditions.

Wind chills could reach some dangerous levels on Sunday. Temperatures are likely going to be stuck in the single digits. With winds of this strength, expect wind chills to sit between -20° and -10°. I know what I'll be doing Sunday... watching football and movies indoors! -ADAM

Call me crazy, but I'll take big snow storms over that cold air anyday. Hopefully I'll be watching a Vikings loss Sunday. Thanks for all the hard work you all do !

Personally, I'm ready for a December thaw . . .

Chad, I'll be watching the same game, but since my roots are from the land of 10,000 lakes I will be cheering for a different outcome than you. :-)

Renee, there might be some warmer weather after Christmas during the last week of the month. One can only hope!

I have older in-laws traveling from Brownsburg Indiana via I-74 West to I-39 North... in your opinion, which storm system should be better to travel on the highway? Tomorrow morning or Wednesday?
