Update 2:30pm: The back edge of the snow is moving through Jo Daviess County. Snow will taper off from west to east as the rest of the afternoon and first part of the evening wear on. In Rockford, the accumulating snow should end sometime around 5pm with some lingering flurries thereafter.

Woodstock [Mchenry Co, IL] broadcast media reports SNOW of M0.1 INCH at 01:10 PM
Freeport [Stephenson Co, IL] trained spotter reports SNOW of M3.0 INCH at 12:58 PM
Milton [Rock Co, WI] nws employee reports SNOW of M2.0 INCH at 12:01 PM
Freeport [Stephenson Co, IL] trained spotter reports SNOW of E2.5 INCH at 11:56 AM

Update 11:45am:
Accumulations thus far are still very light and slushy in and around the Rockford metro. We still have a big batch of snow stretching from Belvidere back through Dubuque so we have several more hours of snow to deal with. Some possible convective snow has been seen around Rock County indicating some bands of heavy snow. I still believe the heaviest amounts of snow will fall on a line between Galena, Monroe, Janesville, and Milwaukee. Lesser accumulations will be shoveled along Interstate 88.

Update 10am
: Some light snow has started flying at the station. Temperatures are in the mid 30s which is keeping accumulations from beginning. Visibilities are starting to drop in many locales so even though the road conditions aren't too slick yet, you will still have to take it easy on the gas pedal. If you are in Rochelle, DeKalb, Belvidere, or Marengo the snow should reach you between 11 and noon.

Original Post: The snow is beginning to intensify off to the west. As of 8am the only nearby observation sites reporting snow were in Dubuque and Madison where the activity was called light. No accumulations have been seen in these two locations yet, but that will be changing shortly.

Some faint sunshine is actually being seen in Winnebago County this morning and temperatures are rather mild. Due to the warm surface conditions the snow will start off with more of a 10:1 ratio before it gets fluffier when cold air seeps in later this afternoon. I still expect the snow to begin in the Rockford metro around 10 or 11 o'clock this morning. Roadways will deteriorate significantly this afternoon as the snow turns moderate to heavy in intensity. If you have some errands to run today, the earlier you head out the better off you will be. More updates coming shortly. -ADAM

So I was in Freeport this morning. At 830am the snow started to come down. By 930a it was coming down at a pretty good clip, and i figured I should head back home to Rockford.

Bypass 20 in Freeport was in horrible shape, as it was down to one lane (barely) as it was completely snow covered.

As I got closer to Rockford, the better highway 20 was.

And then when I got home ten minutes ago, not even a flake flying yet! wow!

So yes, it will get bad, and it will get bad quick! Be safe!

It is snowing lightly here on Bell School Rd about 3 minutes from the mall.

Are we still expecting about 4-5 inches?

I just drove from Rockford to Rockton --Rockton has a LOT more snow than Rockford.

Make the snow stop! We are in the Forreston School district-they are getting out early. Snow is coming down pretty hard. I'm not ready for winter! Yuck!

No problem Laura, I will just hit the tranquil skies button here in the weather center and all should be swell soon! :-) If only we could control the weather... ahh the possibilities.

In all seriousness, the snow will continue at this pace through the afternoon with very little let up.
