Winter Storm Watch

The entire viewing area is under a Winter Storm Watch from Tuesday morning through Wednesday morning.

Just took a quick look at this morning's model runs... we're still in line for the potential for quite a bit of snow. A widespread area of 6"+ is possible. Details this afternoon after I've looked at stuff at work.

In the more short-term... Will the freezing drizzle and sleet being predicted tonight cause any travel difficulties by tomorrow morning?

I'll wait for details on the Monday Night-Wednesday Storm before I ask anything else. :)

Thanks.

Yeah according to the GFS model it looks like a lot of rain could come because the freeze line will hover around the IL/WI border for about half the event, then it will move south to give us the snow. That will be an icy mess.

So here's a question, Justin G:

I commute 125 mi (round trip) to work every day, heading straight up I-90/I-39.

So -- let's suppose I could beg off (or at least telecommute) one, but probably not both of Monday & Tuesday.

Which day would be better to go & which day would be better to telecommute?

Until I started reading about freezing rain on Monday I was thinking Tuesday would be the better day to telecommute, but now I'm not so sure.

No pressure Adam or Justin though... none at all. =P

WI Wx Buff... Tuesday looks like it would be the preferable day to telecommute. Monday should be all right... just keep an eye on things in the evening on the way back.

Hey, thanks Justin G ... that is very helpful!

Yeah, Milwaukee NWS is discussing the chance of 10-12" from Dodgeville to Madison on Tuesday... and I can buy into that potential.

Definitely something you'd want to avoid. :)

Okay.

Well, Milwaukee NWS called this a "classic panhandle hook" storm so I got interested in looking up panhandle hook storms.

2 famous panhandle hook storms were the Amistice Day storm in 1940 and the storm that sank the Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior in 1975. (Note: not all panhandle hook storms are this bad - these 2 famous ones are famous just because they were extreme examples!)

Anyway, for any other Weather Buffs out there, there is a fascinating account of the Armistice Day storm of 1940 that was researched by Paul Douglas in Minneapolis. It is here:

http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/200011/10_steilm_blizzard-m/

Happy reading!

Undoubtedly this "panhandle hook" storm won't be nearly as bad!

Let's hope not!

The panhandle hook, also known as a Texas hook, is what our classic winter storms are.

I recommend reading anything that had Paul Douglas involved. He's a phenomenal meteorologist.
