Each morning I write up a forecast worksheet where I jot down thoughts and trends as I sift through the models. Under the last two days of the 7 day outlook I wrote only one word: disgusting.
At the beginning of the month, Eric made a blog post about one of our long term models projecting an extreme cold spell for the middle of the month. As we get closer and closer to this timeframe, this scenario seems more and more plausible. An airmass on the order of -50 to -40°F has been building over portions of Alaska and northern Canada. An airmass that is this cold and dense can only stay bottled up for so long. Eventually a polar plunge has got to break loose across the United States. The jet stream is going to turn a large trough our way starting Monday night of next week. This spell of frigid conditions is going to begin on Tuesday the 13th and last for quite awhile. I would expect bitterly cold temperatures to last through Saturday the 17th. Don't expect a return to more normal readings until after that. In summary, we've got a spill of arctic proportions coming real soon. Buy some long underwear this weekend! -ADAM

When will the next update for the snow amounts-- it sounds rather consensual that amounts are likely going to be raised-- Thanks...
So, looks like about 5 inches in Dubuque, eh? And, this is not necessarily the final number, correct? Amounts are likely to be raised?
