Today's weather can definitely be classified as severe, but it is much different than what we typically deal with. During severe winter storms, we normally need to send out updates pretty frequently as driving conditions deteriorate and precipitation types vary. Severe weather during the warm months changes even more rapidly. We can have thunderstorms blow up in an hour, and tornadoes spin down within minutes.
This severe weather event is odd to me, because the only analysis to share is that it is dangerously cold. The conditions aren't going to change anytime in the next 24-36 hours as our skies stay clear and our temperatures stay frigid. Wind Chill Advisories extend as far south as northern Mississippi and northern Alabama. I believe almost all schools have canceled class for the day, even Rockford after attempting to hold out overnight.
Here are a few unbelievable factoids to pass along. This morning's temperatures in Anchorage, Alaska were in the low 40s while Houston, Texas was sitting in the upper 30s. Furthermore, the temperature this morning at the North Pole was -9°F. The temperature at the South Pole was -17°F. The unofficial low at the Rockford Int'l Airport was -16°. Can you believe it? It was warmer this morning at Santa's house than it was in the Forest City!!! -ADAM

Adam, I heard even after this cold is done and we have the warmup next week, that another cold spell will follow. Is that true
Where is exactly the north pole? I do know there is North Pole, AK.
The North Pole reading of -9 was taken from a buoy at the actual north pole at the top of the earth. North Pole, Alaska this morning was rather balmy in the 30s above zero!
