Freezing rain event for Saturday night

Winter Weather Advisories are expected for the region for Saturday afternoon through Sunday afternoon!

SEE THE SIDEBAR TO THE RIGHT FOR MORE WEATHER GRAPHICS.

While the weekend began on a quiet note (and will likely end on the same note) we've got quite a batch of weather to deal with in the middle. Late Saturday afternoon we will begin to see some freezing drizzle and freezing rain in the area.

During the overnight Saturday, precipitation amounts will be heaviest as low pressure tracks into central Illinois. Areas north of Madison and Milwaukee will see mainly snow with 3-6 inches possible. South of I-88, where temperatures are expected to be above 32°, just plain-old rain is expected for most of the night. Roadways will become very slick but the good news is that the brunt of this system will come when most people are asleep...and off of the roads.

By daybreak Sunday up to 1/4 inch of ice accumulation can be expected in the Rockford metro. Untreated roadways and sidewalks will be very treacherous.

The freezing rain will move east of the metro by Sunday afternoon with increasing sunshine late in the day.

We'll have continuing coverage of this event right here on the weather blog this weekend. -ES

Side note: I updated our blog link list over there ---> . It will automatically update and list them based on which ones have been recently updated. Cool, huh? We will also be adding more of them in the coming days/weeks. -ES

Ok, thank you eric. I sure hope the salt trucks are out at that time so I can get home safely. I work at the walmart on owen center and I live behind the forest hills country club.

From what I read on the NWS websites discussion, sounds like they are expecting all rain, although very light rain. But yet they have been known to be wrong. But I hope they are right this time. Also hard to believe tuesday into wednesday we might be getting snow and wednesday would make the 1 year anniversary of the poplar grove tornado.
