What do you think the red object is in this picture? If you guessed school bus, you deserve partial credit. If you chose windsled, you are right on the money.
The credit for finding this sweet story goes to Mr. Gehrts. This so called "windsled" is a device that folks in extreme northern Wisconsin use as a means of transportation. La Pointe (pop. 250) is a small town on an island off the south shore of Lake Superior.
During the warmer months, students in La Pointe take a ferry to get to school on the mainland. During the bitter cold of winter, the passageway is frozen solid enough for a van to escort the students to and from school. During the in between times of floating ice, the windsled is utilized. The contraption has two large fans on the back of it with the body of the boat on skis. This allows it to glide over thin ice. It weighs 9000 pounds, has 336 square feet, travels at a speed of 18 mph, and can hold up to 20 students. Seems like a pretty cool way to drive to school! -ADAM
