Storm wrap up

Some final numbers are coming in for this snow event. This was a very impressive clipper to say the least! We received some 11"+ reports in parts of Rock and Walworth Counties with lesser amounts to the south of Rockford. I don't have a storm total at my house (in Rockford) but measured 4.5 inches of new snow from last night. Thank goodness this snow came in two batches, one Friday morning and one Friday night. This gave road crews a tolerable situation to handle.

There are some slick spots this morning no doubt. Please be careful if you're venturing out but I have a feeling we'll all be able to get where we're going today so long as we allow some extra time.

Meteorologist Justin Gehrts will be updating the blog early this afternoon and have an insight at a few more potent clipper systems that could arrive early next week...just in time for the arctic outbreak by week's end.

Have a good weekend everybody and thanks for stopping by the blog! -ES

In Beloit, WI (Rock Co) I measured 3.3" for the first round and 6.8" additional for the 2nd round for a total of 10.1" since Thursday night. (Already reported to NWS.)

It is very light and fluffy and there is already some drifting > 1 ft.

I am guessing this stuff will blow around pretty easily until it starts to settle & compact.

Wow. I was not expecting this much snow --I guess I was in denial :-)

Thanks WI Weather Buff! I am headed to Green Bay today. Looks like I-43 is better than 90/39 to Madison. What a strong clipper!!!

Renee: I was in denial too. I hate going 2-4 inches 48 hours in advance...then changing it to "3-6 with local 6-12" right before it starts.

We'll have fun with the next two clippers Monday PM and Wednesday. Those could be robust as well.

Have a good weekend! -ES

I think the last clipper I ever rememeber giving us this much snow was back in I believe in 90 or 91. I worked at the hampton inn here in rockford and was outside and was fine, about 5 minutes later looked out and snowing gangbusters. Be safe driving up to green bay eric. Lets see how much snow we will have before the arctic gates open up for us.

From Friday's snow episode, my area got about 2.25 inches of snow, give or take half an inch or so.

From last night's snowfall that continued into this morning, I measured 6.25" of snow, as an average.

6.25+2.25= 8.5" of new snow in the Dubuque area, after many Dubuquers were complaining this week that the lack of snow cover for the past few weeks has been depressing. Now it's a wintry wonderland :)

How strong will the Monday-Tuesday system be, and how about the Tuesday-Wednesday one?
--If they are strong and dump copious snow over the area, increased snow cover-decreased temperatures?

I have noticed on the hpc's website for day 3 which is monday, we are in the ring for at least a 10 percent chance of seeing at least 4 inches of snow. Looks to me like we are getting some of the snow back that we lost the day after christmas.

Looks like the last band of moderate snow is moving through my area right now.

Time to get ready for the next one!

Im interested in seeing a map of the snowfall totals... it sounded like to me that there was a lot of different amounts.

I just hope eric made it up to green bay ok today. We will see what justin says today about the next two that are supposed to come through before the big arctic outbreak. I was in a room on game site today and someone said that in europe it is -49. I don't know if that is air temp or wind chill.

Wow tony, what part of Europe? The uninhabited areas of Greenland?

That's pretty cold, and besides, in Europe its probably expressed in degrees Celsius. That would be more than -56 Fahrenheit.

I wonder if that was a typo? I could be wrong but I don't think any of mainland Europe is having that kind of a cold snap right now, except maybe high in the Alps.

Any bloggers here planning on attending the NWS 2009 Sever Weather training ? If not and you would like to just head here : Schedule

As for the snow, here in South Beloit there looks to be around 10-11 inches of the stuff. Nasty storm, could have been a whole lot worse had this clipper had strong winds with it.

Chad, I usually go every year. Being so close to the state line I try to attend one put on by the Chicago office (i.e., somewhere in IL) every other year and one put on by the Milwaukee office (i.e., somewhere in WI) in alternate years. It is interesting to compare the trainings put on by the 2 different NWS offices. They both cover the same general material, but definitely with different focus and different styles of presentation.

Ill go to the spotter training class again if I don't have to work that night. It is on a wednesday at 6:30pm.

Do I have to call and sign up or something?

For the spotter training, just be at the airport public safety building on the day and time listed and when its over they will give you a card certifying you are a trained spotter. It is fun. They show you all kinds of severe weather situations. I have gone the last couple years and enjoyed it. Justin and Eric were at it last year.
