Visible west winds aloft

On sunny days like today, the visible satellite picture can show us a lot. To give you your bearings, the red dot is the location of Rockford. But what's the deal with the black oval?

It's the steam plume from the Byron nuclear plant. There's apparently a pretty good westerly wind aloft, as the plume has made it beyond DeKalb County.

That is a cool picture being able to see the steam against the snowcover on the ground. Great picture.
