What's in store this week

The weather story for this week are the temperature changes ahead... nothing as extreme as last week, of course, but it'll be noticeable.

We'll still be stuck below normal for the first couple days of the week, thanks to the jet stream still being oriented north-south. That will allow a steady supply of chilly air to flow into our area. By midweek, though, the ridge in the West will try to push eastward... however, it will begin to break down as it does so. The very mild conditions in the Plains won't make it here, unfortunately, but we should finally crack the freezing mark for the first time since January 4.

That won't last very long. Another trough will be ready to swing back in by about Friday and lasting through at least the weekend. It'll turn sharply colder during that timeframe, but not nearly as bad as last week. There isn't a supply of extremely cold air available... it all got drained away into our neck of the woods!

I would rather not see -25 again anytime soon. Justin, do you think that the bitter cold of last week may be the last one for this winter, or is it hard to tell, since the fact that it is almost late january and the days are getting longer. Also, any major snows coming in the future.

It would be very difficult for another cold blast like that to happen again this winter. The arctic air we experienced last week was festering in Alaska and the Yukon for many weeks... and we're running out of time for that with increasing daylight, especially way up north.

No significant snow this week. One of our models was suggesting significant snow for Friday, but has scaled back on that bigtime. Longer-range indications suggest a possible snow next week.

What happened to the "January thaw" hypothesis discussed a few days back?

I take it either (a) we're not having one this year, or (b) this (Wed/Thurs above freezing) is it.

?

I was thinking about that as well.

I would say that our more mild midweek is it... and if that isn't warm enough to qualify for a January thaw (I personally would say that it isn't), then we're not getting one.

Maybe we'll luck out and get some warmth in February.

Oh, and I've talked about my buddy at the NWS in McGrath, AK where it was -50s a couple weeks back... last week, they were in the +50s with rain!

Well, it sounds like Alaska is getting that January Thaw anyway.
