December to start on a frigid note

Get ready for the cold! 13WREX is forecasting the first major winter chill to take place just as we switch the calendar from November to December. There are some indications that we may stay below freezing for many days starting this weekend, lingering into the following week.

Our average high temperature for today is 40°. We are expecting the next few days to be in the 35-45° range. A cold front will then tug down the cold air beginning on Wednesday. Secondary reinforcements will step the temperatures down progressively during the weekend. During the Sunday-Tuesday time frame (12/2-12/4) we are expecting temperatures to be around 15° below average which would yield highs in the middle 20s. Lows could be dip into the single digits in some locations which would be near record cold.

As far as precipitation, we are expecting a few bouts of wintry weather during the next week or so. Right now none of these look to be prolific snow generators. However, I am expecting the ground to whiten up later this week into early next week (which will only promote the development of the cold). -ERIC

This place is kinda dead since anonymous comments aren't allowed... Did something happen that made you decide to change it or were the comments just getting too cluttered? I like to see what everyone has to say.

Another thing i thought of was maybe people don't know how to set up an account... so maybe post a link on the side with instructions?

Our web hits have actually been increasing steadily Justin! Since we enabled the comment moderation, some of our anonymous posters have gotten quieter, but I hope they will take the short amount of time to register for a free account.

We need to have some moderation over what was said...and make sure that we're sticking to the point (and that's weather).

We are hoping to add viewer POSTS in the near future! That way our regular bloggers will be able to have an identity and be able to post right here on the 13News Weather Blog.

I like your idea of posting a how-to! I will work on that!

Have a great day! -ERIC

Ok, I was a regular anonymous blogger and it only took me less than 30 seconds to register! Not too bad, huh?

As for the weather, I love snow around for the Holidays, but come January, I really ask myself why I continue to live in the Midwest!

Way to go Navy Mom! :) Glad to have you aboard.

The Midwest has the best summers! That's why we live here. Let's just hope that spring comes early next year...how about an early thaw in February??? -ERIC

Hey Eric...

So I went on theweathergun site -- would I be off if I'm guessing 2-4" of snow for next Sunday/Monday based on the fact that the key is based on total precip. (i.e. .10 precip = 1" of snow)?

Hope it doesn't move like a turtle, that's for sure.

I remember last year eric saying something about the .1" rain = 1" snow... the number can vary depending how wet the snow is. But a week before snow the numbers are usually off anyway, so who knows.

That is a good read from yesterday's data set. On the other hand, predicting snowfall totals 7 days in advance is pure speculation. Eric and I typically wait until we are 48-60 hours ahead of the onset of a major storm system to predict snowfall totals.

As far as a rain to snow ratio: the 10 to 1 ratio is the starting ground. During warmer events I would drop it to 8 to 1 since heavier, moisture-laden snow compacts. During colder events I would increase the ratio to 12 or even 15 to 1 since lighter, moisture-starved snow fluffs up very nicely.

Good work & keep signing up those accounts! -ADAM
