Winter Starting... Again

I know that we've been dealing with wintry weather for three weeks now, but an important date comes this weekend. Some calendars say that Winter officially begins Friday and some say Saturday. Well, depending on where you live they both are right. Winter will officially begin in the central time zone at 12:08am on Saturday morning. For our friends in the mountain and west time zones it will officially begin late Friday night.

As we've been talking about on the blog all week long, it appears as though we will be welcoming the first official day of winter with a bona fide winter storm. Driving conditions should be fine up until Saturday evening. That is when I expect the rain to change into snow. The heaviest precipitation will fall between 6pm and midnight, causing treacherous travel on area roadways. There won't be a lot of additional snow on Sunday, but with gusty northwest winds up to 35 mph visibilities will be severely limited with blowing and drifting snow becoming a significant problem.

For business purposes the Quad Cities NWS office has issued a WINTER STORM WATCH for Jo Daviess, Stephenson, Carroll, and Whiteside counties for Saturday afternoon and night. The watch means that the potential exists for a major winter storm... basically what we've been talking about all week. The rest of the region will eventually see some watches and warnings as the system draws near. -ADAM

Any idea how much accumulation is expected?

Due to widely varying precipitation totals, and the fact that the rain to snow time is being pushed back slightly later, we've decided to hold off on the accumulation forecast until the storm gets more organized. Eric will have the official WREX snow forecast on the blog by the middle of this afternoon.

Yeah because I have read, that counties out west might get 3-8 inches, but less than 2 inches here which seems weird. I will have to check the blog tonight since i work til 11 tonight.
