What is "advection fog?"

1. The set up: Below zero temperatures for two nights in a row. Warm air is beginning its surge over the Southern Plains on its way into the Midwest. Even with southerly winds, temperatures remain higher than the dewpoint. For instance, at 10pm our temperature is 19 with a dewpoint of 11.

2. Warm air will arrive with vigor for the weekend. As this warm air crosses the snow-packed ground the air modifies (or cools).

3. As the air cools down, it approaches the dewpoint...or frost point...or fog point. Not only will we see fog from the modifying air, we'll also see a contribution from the melting snow. Visibilities may near zero in some spots this weekend so plan accordingly. The only saving grace when it comes to visibilities will be the low-level wind speed. If speeds remain above 15 mph the fog won't be quite as bad.

I love these little meteorology lessons.

Thanks Eric!
