Tranquility in the Weather Center

After viscious storms ripped through the region yesterday, it is welcome news that our weather pattern is heading in the opposite direction in a hurry. As you can see on the 7 day outlook the skies are looking fairly quiet over the next week.

Staring into the crystal ball even further reveals that the jet stream is going to continue to be sitting slightly to the south of us into the middle of the month. This will cause the majority of the energy in the atmosphere to move through the western Plains and into the deep south, which is why they are looking at above average precipitation amounts between August 10th and the 14th. We should be on the cool side (north side) of the jet stream, which will lead to lower temperatures than normal. Overall, it does not appear as though we will see another major severe weather outbreak for quite awhile.

What is extremely odd is that we have still yet to record a 90 degree temperature at the Rockford International Airport. The latest date for the first 90 degree day of the year is August 15th. There has never been a year without a 90 measured at RFD! How about another quirky record/stat to add onto the wacky year of 2008? -ADAM

Hi,
I have a question. We live in Nordic Woods in Byron. We were out today looking at all the damage and found that the closer you were to the Rock River...the worse the damage seemed. Our neighborhood is wooded and we had a lot of downed trees, large branches etc. Does a storm, like the one we had last night, follow the river valley..or is this just a coincidence? Love your weather coverage...too bad we couldn't get it last night due to our 8 hr. power loss.

I thought I saw that we reached 90 July 16th.. unless I was dreaming or something.

Justin, checking the records, the Chicago office has RFD down for a low of 69 on the 16th of July with a high of 89. We were probably within a half of a degree that afternoon.

Balisha, thunderstorms do not care where our rivers are located. Initially it seems like a coincidence, but I'm sure I could make a better hypothesis once I saw the damage.

Allie, as of 5am this morning there were still a combined 300 customers in Stephenson and Carroll County without power.
