Several years ago some TV consultant came in and said "Why don't you do a seven day forecast?" We obliged, but hesitantly. Certainly we can see weather patterns that far out and it's nice to give an extended "outlook", but the confidence in days 5, 6, and 7 is generally less than 50% (especially this time of year).
Having said that, confidence is now getting higher that a messy system will affect the upper Midwest for Wednesday. The Hydrometeorological Prediction Center issues forecasts for winter-type events in advance and they've got an ominous blue oval over the Upper Midwest for Wednesday. This is the probability of a snow greater than 4". Right now it appears that low pressure will develop rapidly over Central Illinois on Wednesday. This will support a rapidly cooling atmosphere north and west of the low's center. Rain will change to snow over much of Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin Wednesday night. Betting on accumulating snow for us would be a crapshoot. Let's wait for a few more model runs before jumping to any conclusions...but stay tuned! -ERIC
