Snowstorm has arrived!

4:00 am update - Snow will continue to fall heavily through mid-morning. Some lightning strikes have been noted in northern Missouri around 3:15am. If we should get some thundersnow in the area this morning, that will enhance snowfall rates...and snowfall totals. Visibilities are less than 1/2 mile in most locations with moderate to heavy snow. Winds are gusting out of the northeast near 40mph. -ERIC

2:41 am update - Heavy snow located just south of the Rockford metro as of 2:40. Notice the fact that the snow doesn't diminish too much to the south. In fact the snow goes south to Joplin, Missouri! Snow will continue to be heavy through the next 7-8 hours. -ERIC

2:00 am update - Moderate snow being observed at DeKalb with visibilities around 3/4 mile. Galesburg is down to 1/2 mile. Macomb takes the cake with zero visibility and heavy snow! Our Skywatch cameras in downtown Rockford are showing a completely snow-covered State Street Bridge! The best is still coming folks!!! -ERIC

Amazing pressure falls are being observed across southern Illinois. This tells us that the low pressure is intensifying early this morning. While snowfall is a little late to arrive, snowfall amounts will still range between 6 and 12 inches across the Rockford metro. Within the past 1/2 hour, visibilities have been reduced from 7 miles to 3/4 miles! Drifting will become a problem within the next few hours. Developing... -ERIC

p.s. I am glad you all are still up! What do you think about the blog idea? I think it's great to be able to give you the information as we get it! :-)

The blog is so convenient and I check it often (esp tonight)I agree that it is wonderful to have a weatherman that does care about the residents of winnebago county. Keep up the good work and I look forward to your next report. Stay safe and warm.

Finally- I was terrified to think that it just wasn't going to get here and if it would, with little snow. I think I am worse than some of the kids out there wishing for a snow day!! I went to sleep with a "see it to believe it" attitude and am pleasantly surprised to see what's going on outside! I just caught your update, Eric. Thanks for being there for all of us!

Eric, speaking from someone who doesn't live in the Rockford area, and looking for information because I have friends there, this is FANTASTIC. Looks like you guys are being hammered. I'm 6 hrs NE of you and suffering with a freezing rain/sleet combo that leaving the awning outside my window with 1 1/2" icycles...really rather have the snow. Thanks for all your hard work keeping web readers up to date.

Hi Eric! You were right on about the storm. Our driveway, just north of Byron, had around a foot of snow, with drifts over two feet. The sun around noon was great and just like you predicted. Saw you on the weather channel and on weather.com. Keep up the good work.

Wow, what a day! I live in Oregon and I was suppose to go to Rockford this morning. Needless to say, I decided not to go. I did need to get to the store, I didn't think you would be right last night, Eric. Of course, I got stuck in my driveway about 3 times. What should have been a 15 minute errand, turned out to be 1 hour. I need to have more faith in our weather people. The weather team of WREX is awesome, thanks.
