5:55pm udpate - The official snowfall total for the Rockford Airport today was 10.7". With it being such a big storm, I decided to look back at our weather records. Going from the front of the book to the back, I couldn't find an instance where more than 10.6" of snowfall fell on one day in December. To get some insight, I called Tim Halbach, a Meteorologist with the NWS in Romeoville. We sifted through the records a bit more and agreed this storm produced was the most snow we've ever seen in one calendar day during the month of December! -ERIC
4:20pm update - The graphic on the top-left is the forecast that we first showed you Tuesday night on 13News 10@10. (Part of the problem with a weather blog is the fact that people can go back and see what kind of forecast you've made!) This one worked out A-Okay! The graphic on the top-right is the observed snowfall amounts that we've received from the National Weather Service offices in Milwaukee, Chicago, and the Quad Cities.
While I'm definitely pleased that our forecast verified, I am shocked by the amount of snow that fell in Kenosha, Racine, and Walworth Counties (in Wisconsin). There had to have been some major lake-enhancement of the snowfall in these regions. The reason that Chicago didn't see the heavy snowfall that was predicted was because at the onset of the storm they had quite a bit of sleet. (Since sleet is more dense than a snowflake, it often brings more atmospheric moisture to the ground...reducing snowfall amounts). In any event, we're done with this system. The next headline will be the near-zero temperatures the next few nights. -ERIC
3:00pm update - I'm back after getting a few hours of sleep. I came back into the Weather Center only to find about 100 pages of paper on top of the printer. (Good thing we're recycling these!)
As I went through the snowfall totals, I plotted them on a map (I will get that map up here in a little while). Since I posted them to the best geographical knowledge I have, I can give you some totals based on county. Feel free to comment with your snowfall total! Don't forget to include your town and I will get that on the air tonight at 5, 6, and 10.

We measured 11" on the table in the backyard - in S.E. Rockford near 20th & Charles.
We measured 14" in the South part of Woodstock.
Western edge of Belvidere, 12 inches of undrifted snow. I'm a trained storm spotter for the National Weather Service.
14.8 inches on north side of Harvard
The amazing thing I believe in this whole storm was that the Rockford Airport actully got what everyone else seemed to.
In an article on rrstar.com, they are reporting that there were 2 deeper snowfalls in previous Decembers. It's not a huge deal, but there's a discrepancy somewhere.
"At least two other December storms, one in 1987 and the other in 1951 — spawned deeper snows. And this storm’s snowfall was far short of the all-time record of 16.3 inches set in 1918."
I just got in from almost 24 hours of snow removal. State and Mulford 13", near west side 10", Rural and Alpine 12", Meridian and Auburn 10".
I'm sitting down with a Jack Daniels and waiting for snow removal complaints to start rolling in.
Hi! In Lanark and Shannon we had around 6 inches, less to the west.
