Winter storm on its way!

The image to the left is a forecast probability for a freezing rain event Saturday. Most of our area is in the "at least 10% chance" of at least 1/4" of ice accumulation. In fact, ice accumulations may be near 1/2" in some locations causing major power outages because of downed trees and powerlines. With the amount of available (and forecasted) moisture, this scenario would be potentially catastrophic...and have lasting effects!

The next image is the probability of at least four inches of snow accumulation for Saturday. The chance this will be an all-snow event are nearly equal to that of it being an ice event.

So, what are we in for? Right now, it appears we'll start with some snow late Friday night...change to freezing rain for Saturday morning (with moderate accumulations of ice possible) before we switch back to snow for Sunday (with moderate accumulations of snow likely). The Rockford area has the possibility of receiving 5-10 inches of snow with the five southeast of town and the ten far northwest. This will be a doozy for NE Iowa and Wisconsin. Some areas could receive more than 12" Saturday and Sunday.

What we'll be watching closely is this possibility of snow on top of ice. -ERIC

I lost count during our 5 & 9 up here in Madison... I just remember "more accumulating snow" on every graphic for this weekend... Of course.. I was directing the show, so I was only half watching the weather... I had other things to worry about.
