Storm Moves In
The Winter Storm is beginning to move into the area as of 10:30pm Tuesday. You can see Skywatch Nexrad lighting up to our southwest with moderate rain being reported from Des Moines to Davenport, down to Quincy. Our doppler radar is showing some mixed precipitation over Rockford as of 10:30, confirming our thoughts that the atmosphere is well into its cooling process.
Any rain will change to snow along the US20 corridor overnight with some morning rain/snow mix possible along and south of I-88. Snow will accumulate during the morning commute, with a bullseye of snow over Green and Rock County in Wisconsin.
Even though temperatures will remain right around freezing and our ground temperatures above freezing, accumulation will still occur. I've taken many calls and E-Mails about the temperature profile. We have to look at the atmosphere in three dimensions. From cloud-level down to the surface, we will see temperatures below 32°F. With heavy snowfall expected, accumulations will remain likely with the heaviest snowfall totals showing up across extreme southern Wisconsin (and possibly extreme northern parts of Stephenson and Winnebago Counties). Here's the latest GFS computer forecast for snowfall through the event. Notice the 6" line which is centered over the IL/WI stateline. We'll keep our current forecast going.
Adam Painter will continue our coverage on the blog after 2am Wednesday. I will be in the Weather Center around noon Wednesday as we walk this system out to the east.
Be extremely careful if you're planning on being out and about on Wednesday. Our streets and highways haven't been treated with chemicals for months now...roads will be pretty rough, especially early on.

Its about 4 30 and there hasn't really been any snow yet... does this mean lesser totals?
It's been snowing pretty good here in DeKalb for the last two hours. It is starting to accumulate, though it is under an inch. It rained for two hours, then switched to snow. I wonder if that means that it was all snow near the stateline. My house might get a foot according to www.weather.com. They had their snowfall potential map indicating 6-12 inches right over the Rockford area since yesterday afternoon. In fact, a small blip suggests more than 12 inches of snow near the stateline in Durand.
The latest winter storm in IL:
May 1-2, 1929 in southern and central Illinois!
