Air Quality Awareness Week

Air Quality Awareness week runs from April 30th through May 4th. Today we'll talk about what causes poor air quality. Air quality where you live can vary depending on how much air pollution is emitted in your community, how much pollution is carried into your community, and by the weather.

Ozone is formed with two key pollutants: nirtrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds "cook in the sun". Particle pollution can be directly emitted but can also form when gases react in the air.

Weather also plays a big role in the levels of ozone and particle pollution in the atmosphere. Sunlight and heat can promote ozone formation while light winds and temperature inversions can keep pollution from dispersing. And depending on the direction of the wind, it can acutally bring in pollution from another area.
