This graphic was recently in the USAToday Newspaper. I think it beautifully illustrates how a supercell thunderstorm works.
Supercell: A severe thunderstorm with an intense, long-lived, rotating updraft, known as a mesocyclone. Supercells are the most rare type of thunderstorm (relatively speaking), but are responsible for a lot of the nation's severe weather... including very large hail, damaging thunderstorm winds, and virtually all violent (F4-F5) tornadoes.
