The Storm Prediction Center has put Northern Illinois in a moderate risk of severe weather for this afternoon and evening. We expect thunderstorms to develop during the early afternoon hours across NE and western IA. These storms are expected to produce large hail as they form and move east. Storms will then accelerate as they move east of Des Moines. The speed of these storms may near 50-60mph as they race down I-80 into NW Illinois by mid to late evening. The SPC has categorical chances for severe weather (above). While the chance of a tornado is less than 2%, the chance for large hail is 15%, and for damaging winds: over 45%.
Much of the afternoon will be quiet here, we will be watching things closely this evening. -ERIC
