Staying safe when the mercury rises

With the temperatures expected to rise this weekend, possibly into the middle 90s, it's important to reconize the signs of a heat related illness and know how to prevent it.

Heat Wave: Prolonged period of excessive heat and humidity.
Heat Index: Temperature of what it "feels" like to the body.
Heat Cramps: Muscular pains and spasms due to heavy exertion. Heat cramps are an early signal that the body is beginning to overheat.

Heat Exhaustion: Occurs when people exercise heavily or work in hot, humid places. If not treated, you could suffer from heat stroke.
Heat Stroke: Life-threatening. The body can't deal with the heat the way it's supposed to, such as by sweating.

The best defense against the heat is prevention. Make sure you drink plenty of nonalcoholic fluids (water is the best). Try not to drink liquids that contain large amounts of sugar because they may cause you to lose more body fluid. Stay indoors and try to get into an air-conditioned place. Fans may provide some relief, but when the temperature rises into the 90s a fan will not prevent heat-related illnesses. Wear light-colored, lightweight and loose fit clothing. And most importantly...NEVER leave anyone in a vehicle. Even if it's for a short amount of time or if the windows are open! The temperature inside a vehicle can rise quickly when it's hot outside.
