Gas prices up; Hurricane Dean to blame already?

Both the Mobil and Road Ranger gas stations in Winnebago hiked up their prices today. When I went into work they were both at $2.78. Now they are $2.95. What caused the abrupt jump? Could it be Dean-the-storm-machine? I have a friend in Louisiana who said that a gallon is still $2.60. Another friend in Abilene, Texas said that they are steady around $2.58. Sounds like price gouging to me!

If they are going up with jumps like this because of the hurricane, imagine what the cost of gas will be when a cat3 or cat4 hurricane nears the Gulf of Mexico early next week. Are we talking about $4/gallon gas? Good grief! If the TV station wasn't so far out of town, I'd be biking to work.

Here's a neat graphic (courtesy of Google Earth) showing the different computer models...and the location of the big oil-drilling locations in the Gulf. (Click on the image to enlarge.) -ERIC

p.s. For what it's worth: Wednesday, August 15, 2007: NYMEX West Texas Intermediate for September delivery closed up $0.95 at $73.33 per barrel.

Don't blame Dean. The oil companies use any excuse to raise prices at the pump. After all a lot of our leaders have an interest in oil companies so they will not do anything about it. Also the last summer holiday is only a couple of weeks away and the oil barrons need to get in our pockets a little deeper.

But i agree, you cant jack up gas prices for a hurricane that is thousands of miles away.

Maybe the Big Oil execs needed to buy shoes for their babies' feet? Or maybe the increase is because they have a family to feed? I know I've heard about this somewhere before???
