Severe weather possible tonight/tomorrow

9:05pm - Storms near the Twin Cities are moving at a rapid rate to the southeast. Some of the storms north of there have produced funnel clouds (tornado warnings). The tornado threat will go away as these storms move into West-Central WI. The SPC will "likely" issue a new weather watch downstream of this development. Current track still puts the storms in the Rockford area shortly after midnight.

7:00pm - Storms have had a tough time developing up near the Twin Cities this afternoon and evening. Once they do develop, they will quickly dive southeastward. Storms will likely stay north of us until after midnight (at the earliest). Keep tabs on the storms with the radar to the left.

3:15pm - It appears more likely that a severe weather event may be taking shape for the overnight tonight. Storms will begin to fire across Southeastern Minnesota during the evening hours with a fast cruising speed to the southeast. Storms will move into the Rockford metro after 10pm with damaging winds of 50-70mph. In addition, torrential rainfall will be likely although I agree with Adam's analysis from earlier...the storms will be moving so quick, there will be little chance to receive more than an inch.

With 90s and 100s widespread from Nebraska into Missouri, the heat will prevent a front from moving through the area. Thus, we are expecting numerous rounds of thunderstorms (any of which could be severe) over the next few days. It's the good, old "airmass clash" that will be upon us until the end of the work week. Bottom line? Please keep an ear out for thunder and an eye on the TV/blog for weather alerts. -ERIC

Storms will work straight down the Mississippi River after sunset. Storms will increase in forward momentum once the sun sets. By the time they reach NW Illinois, storm speed may be around 50mph with forward gusts near 70 possible. -ERIC

Seems like we might be in for it the next couple of days. I just love how these bad storms like to come in the middle of the night lol. Think they will end up issuing any watches later on?

Yeah, Eric, maybe Adam and you can explain something to my grandparents. I tried to explain it to them tonight about the storms and why they are so bad overnight. They always thought that the stroms were suppose to be bad during the heating of the day. This is what I sort tryed to explain to them. The reason why were having storms with this much intensity overnight is because there's a frontal boundry and were sort maybe riding along the jet stream. The thing is they still don't get it, so what I did was told him the chances of a torando is not likley, can be but not likley and the greatest out of the stroms it seems this week is rainfall and heavy winds. Every storm is diffrent, it's just like every snow storm I told them. Maybe Adam or you can make a graphic and explain it to the older folks that don't really under stand it.

Thanks
