Cue the cold air

Well, it's a good thing that the low pressure nudged even a bit further northwest than anticipated. Northeastern Iowa received the ice... and has since picked up 6-8"+ of snow along with gusty winds. I've even seen some reports of power outages. Since the low backed up a bit, it swung in the warmer air sooner than planned and kept the ice to a minimum. Hopefully your basement escaped the runoff from the rain and snowmelt, though. The newsroom has been told about some flooding in Machesney Park and Freeport, mostly street flooding. Anywhere that the street is in a low area and drainage is blocked is where some of the standing water will occur. I suggest avoiding such areas altogether.

Speaking of the runoff... it's going to freeze tonight. Add a little bit of snow on top of that and you have pretty slick surfaces. The fog we have out in rural areas will freeze as well. Travel tonight will be unpleasant in spots. Hopefully by the morning commute, road conditions will have improved. Even so, plan on taking a bit of extra time when you head back to work on Monday morning.

Cold air will stick around for a few days, too. Highs will be stuck in the teens and lows will drop back below zero again. I've seen a glimmer of hope that by next weekend we'll be getting warmer (that is, close-to-normal) temperatures to return. Also keeping an eye on another potential weather system around that timeframe. Obviously it's way too far out to try to iron out details, but it's something we'll be keeping tabs on.

Wow, I see someone wiped the previous comments out clean. That is good, especially with that first post that was made. I wish we had gotten that snow, that would have pushed us over the top. I have a feeling we won't be breaking the record with spring getting so close now.

As do I Tony, and I sincerely hope it wasn't due to my "off the wall" humor comment that did it. . . .

I was just talking to one of the Weather Service meteorologists in Milwaukee and mentioned that I could do without snow for another nine or ten months. :)

We have until February 29 to break the record. And with the active pattern looking like it's going to continue... it's still a possibility. But I hope not!

I envision somebody out there betting that if Smita calls me "Gretchen" on tonight's news, that we'll beat the snowfall record.

Southern charm, were you the one who made that post slamming wrex for their forecasting. I hope Smita does call justin, "Gretchen" that would be hilarious if we break the snowfall record after that.

No it was somebody under the name "Adam Sorenson". yes.. Sorensen was spelled wrong.

Nope, no way, big oh goose egg and absolutely not! I'd never slam anyone Tony .....I'm simply not strong enough!

But you have to admit Smita calling Justin-Gretchen was humorous, and then Eric not turning his mic on "twice" in one week was priceless. Just goes to show you that they are human like the rest of us, but can joke and have fun and still be professional.

I slept thru justins actual debut, so I didn't see Smita call him gretchen, but I did see one of the times when eric forgot to turn his mic on. That's why 13 is the news leader, they can have fun during their time they have between the 10at 10 and the weather segment. Most stations are just too serious and don't have fun.
