Our friends down the Rock River in Milan (next to the Quad Cities) are dealing with record flooding. An ice jam has caused the flood stage to reach 16.38 feet. The old record crest was 16.15 feet in 1973. The river rose a foot and a half overnight, illustrating just how dangerous an ice jam can be.The river has been above flood stage (12 feet) since Sunday. The ice jam spans the entire river and is about a half-mile long. Ice has piled up as high as three feet.
Nearly 100 homes have been evacuated along the river. Unfortunately for those residents, the National Weather Service doesn't see any signs of the jam breaking apart.
