The snowcover effect

Today's highs were dictated quite a bit by the haves and have-nots. The "haves" are those who have snowcover; the "have nots" are those with bare ground.

White ground is difficult to heat since white reflects most of the Sun's energy. North of the snow line (the squiggly blue line on the map), temperatures were unable to get especially warm. (Locations near the lake were cool because of a breeze off the lake.) South of the snow line, the bare ground was able to absorb more of the Sun's energy and warm the air, allowing temperatures to climb into the 50s and 60s.

We'll continue to see this pattern on sunny days until our snow finally is gone. But ith every day in the 7-Day Outlook having highs above freezing, we'll continue to whittle away at that snowpack.

I know our front yard is pretty much snow free except for a few snowpiles on our curb, and the snow in our backyard is melting fast. Looks like major snows are done, at least we think.
