Leafnadoes

Sunday will be a prime day for leafnadoes. What's a leafnado, you ask? Well, you've probably seen leaves and other small debris briefly swirling around before, typically near an inside corner to a building. Those are leafnadoes! Of course, it's a non-technical term and hardly anything to take seriously, but when I was at Iowa State, we would joke about leafnadoes every fall. In fact, one of my good weather buddies, Andrew, would even write SPC-style outlooks and discussions regarding leafnadoes. I was reminiscing about them today and sent him an email.

Without further ado... a sample of Andrew's work from 2006.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
ISU METEOROLOGY EXAM CENTER
513 PM CDT WED OCT 11 2006

...THERE IS A HIGH RISK OF LEAFNADOES ACROSS THE UPPER MIDWEST...

...SYNOPSIS...

A COLD FRONT SWEEPING ACROSS THE NORTHERN PLAINS IS SETTING UP IDEAL CONDITIONS FOR LEAFNADOES TO OCCUR THROUGHOUT THE MIDWEST TODAY.

...IA...

LEADING EDGE OF THE COLD FRONT HAS PUSHED WELL INTO IL AND MO...BEHIND THIS FRONT IS THE FOCUS OF ATTENTION FOR THIS HIGH RISK OF LEAFNADOES. XMOU and SMOI4 HAVE HAD WIND GUSTS IN THE LAST HOUR EXCEEDING 30 MPH. THUS STRONG WINDS...THE SEASONAL LEAF FALL...AND BUILDINGS WILL PROVIDE FOR A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR LEAFNADOES NEAR BUILDING CORNERS...ENTRY WAYS TO BUILDINGS...AND SOMETIMES IN OPEN COURTYARDS WHERE LEAVES ARE PRESENT AS THESE AREAS ARE FAVORABLE FOR LEAFNADOES DEVELOPMENT.

LEAFNADOES HAVE BEEN SPOTTED THIS AFTERNOON BY SPOTTERS...SOUTH OF BESSEY HALL AT 113PM...PARKS LIBRARY AT 115PM...SOUTH OF MACKAY HALL ON CENTRAL CAMPUS AT 253PM. A MAJORITY OF THESE LEAFNADOES HAVE HAD WEAK CIRCULATION AND HAVE BEEN SHORTLIVED.

IT SHOULD ALSO BE MENTIONED THAT THIS COULD PERHAPS BE A RARE LEAFNADO EVENT AS SNOW FLURRIES MAY OCCUR WITH LEAFNADOES, ALTHOUGH THIS THREAT SEEMS TO BE DIMINISHING.

No leafnadoes in my yard ... none of the leaves have fallen from my trees yet.

I always marvel at this ... some of my neighbors have bare trees and golen-orange leaf-covered yards while others (like mine) have nary a leaf on them. In fact the leaves on my trees still look fairly green.
