Sunday drive anyone?

Every year at this time I grab the dog and a full tank of gas and explore some of the beautiful country roads Illinois and Wisconsin have to offer. Sunday's my day! We're right at peak for fall color this weekend so be sure to get out and enjoy the beauty! Don't forget your cameras and send us your photos!

Here's a link to a few unique destinations within a one-tank's drive:
Mineral Point
New Glarus
Lake Geneva
Galena

I want to wholeheartedly second that thought.

I had to drive to La Crosse on business this week. A little more than a single tank of gas...

But was it ever gorgeous! The sumac.... the maple trees ... the golden fields not yet plowed under....

In fact, if you want to know how wonky my mind can get on a long drive... what I found myself thinking was how proud I am of my state ... how proud I am of my country. I was watching the landscape thinking what a rich land we have, what abundant resources, and thinking about how many generations (and before Europeans got here, generations of Ho-Chunk and Potowonomi and Sioux and Menominee and other nations) have lived through all kinds of "thick and thin" -- hard winters, economic downturns, wars, famines (layoffs) and other kinds of hardship that we sometimes think unique to today) -- and how strong our collective spirit has been, to carry on, and to preserve so much of the beauty and bounty of the land for future generations, despite whatever hardships they endured... and how blessed we are ...

See, I told you my mind goes wonky on a long drive.

Anyway -- I HIGHLY recommend it!

And in WI you can actually get gas (I did today) for $2.85/gal .... the best prices we've seen in a long time....

I have noticed (and maybe its just me) that the color isn't as vibrant this year as years past. Now, that doesnt say that some areas aren't really beautiful, cuz they are, but overall here the color seems a hair dull.

It all could be because I was spoiled seeing the absolutely stunning brilliance of color on the western side of the Rocky Mountains two weeks ago. ;)

I am going to try to get some foliage sent in as soon as possible. I would in my neighborhood, but a lot of trees are getting bare fast. And will the chat be active during snowstorms this coming winters or is that just during severe weather events.

I, for one, don't like how quickly the colors come and go! It would be nice if we could get a full month of pretty trees.

And while I'm not *quite* ready to think a whole lot about snow just yet, we do intend to have the chat and all that jazz during winter storms.

Now that'll be interesting...

I can just see the winter chat log:

"We got another 0.01 inch of snow since the last time I checked in."

"Yes, over here I counted 137 snowflakes just in the past 5 minutes."

"Hold everything! I think, wait, let me check again, YES! That's our neighbor outside with a broom sweeping the sidewalk. I'm located in _________."

"Its still melting as it falls here in ______."

13WREX: "You'll be needing those brooms soon though, _______. "
