LOW TEMPERATURE REPORTS ACROSS NORTHERN ILLINOIS AND NORTHWEST
INDIANA THIS MORNING...
***NO NEW STATE RECORD FOR ILLINOIS***
EARLIER TODAY THE AUTOMATED OBSERVING STATION AT THE ROCHELLE
ILLINOIS AIRPORT IN SOUTHEASTERN OGLE COUNTY REGISTERED A
TEMPERATURE OF -37 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT. THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN A NEW
STATE LOW TEMPERATURE RECORD. HOWEVER...UPON INVESTIGATION...THE
ILLINOIS STATE CLIMATOLOGIST FOUND THAT THE AUTOMATED EQUIPMENT HAD
MALFUNCTIONED AND WAS READING 14 DEGREES TOO LOW. THIS HAS BEEN
CORRECTED AND THE SITE IS NOW REPORTING A REPRESENTATIVE TEMPERATURE.
AS A RESULT...THE ALL TIME LOW TEMPERATURE RECORD FOR ILLINOIS
REMAINS -36 DEGREES SET AT CONGERVILLE ILLINOIS ON THE MORNING OF
JANUARY 5 1999.

Oy.
According to noaawatch.gov the temp at Rochelle airport at 7am was -34. Are you saying that was wrong?
This morning in Franklin Grove a temp of -34 was on a friends temp gauge. Our digital quit at -21.4.
Not looking forward to tonights temp.
considering we are getting down to a potential -26, we are going to warm up pretty significantly throughout the day tomorrow. Much faster than it did today, anyways. ;)
The temperature trend on the Rochelle sensor was very bizarre and was found to be an incorrect reading.
Also, the thermometers that most people have are not calibrated nearly as thoroughly as what the official NWS ones are. Granted, they're still subject to problems (like this morning at Rochelle) but the two can't really be compared in a scientific standpoint.
With the -9 at Lake Geneva....makes me want to break out the sun tan lotion.
Yeah it was odd when I woke up I looked at the local temperatures at about 5 or so and saw Rochelle was around -20 which was amazing. Then I looked back about 2 hours later and it had that false report of -36 or -37 and it just didn't seem like it was possible to drop that fast in one location and not everyone elses.
Thanks for clearing that all up!
You got it Garrett. This was Rochelle's run:
5am = -19
7am = -36
9am = -22
That type of jumping around with very little wind is nearly impossible. Furthermore, that would take a dew point of -40, which wasn't the case anywhere within 500 miles of the sensor.
