From our friends at the Chicago National Weather Service regarding the snow we've had so far this year, comparing it to the snowiest winters (July-June totals) on record:
"AS OF OF JANUARY 12 2009 ROCKFORD HAS HAD 43.3 INCHES...HOW DOES
THIS COMPARE TO WHERE OUR SNOWIEST WINTERS WERE AT THIS POINT?
1978-79 33.2 INCHES...10.1 INCHES ABOVE
2007-08 24.5 INCHES...18.8 INCHES ABOVE
1942-43 15.5 INCHES...27.8 INCHES ABOVE"
The December-February record is 64.5 inches, set just last year. As of Monday, we were 21.2 inches away from tying it with six weeks to go - and we're getting some snow right now.
Will we break the record two years in a row? Only time will tell...

Speaking of snow...
I love WI and love WI State Employees (after all, I'm one too) but (having already sent this suggestion to our DOT several times to no avail) I just want to gripe that the WI DOT's winter road report is far less helpful than it could be when one checks it at 4 a.m. after overnight weather that could conceivably have affected the a.m. driving conditions in our great state, only to find that the most recent update was at 8 p.m. the night before.
Grrr.
