Tuesday's Winter Storm

One caveat to having a viewing area covered by 3 different National Weather Service offices is that sometimes the watches and warnings don't align. For example, this is what was laid out in front of me this morning. An ICE STORM WARNING will be in effect tonight and tomorrow for Whiteside County. A WINTER STORM WARNING will be in effect tonight and tomorrow for Carroll, Jo Daviess, and Stephenson County. A WINTER STORM WATCH is in effect tonight & tomorrow for Winnebago, Ogle, Lee, Boone, McHenry, and DeKalb County. No watches or warnings have been issued yet for southern Wisconsin, but by no means will the Badger State escape this storm. The Chicago office has not issued any warnings yet as they are waiting for the midday data to come in. At that time they will likely change the watch into a warning.

If all of this jargon has your head in a spin, all you need to know is this. A strong storm system will cause treacherous driving conditions for the morning and evening commutes on Tuesday. Freezing rain and sleet are likely. Snowfall accumulations will be light, around an inch or two, with the majority of the precipitation falling in an icy state. -ADAM

If this storm does materialize, what time do you think it will start. I work til 11 tonight and then work at 10 in the morning. Will I be safe or will it be bad by those times.

Your favorite question... I haven't asked yet this year, but...

Snow day?

I go to NIU and they cancelled school for today (monday) because of the security threat and the weather. Which I don't think makes sense because the weather is fine for today.

Tony, it looks like this "event" will get going around 3am or 4am. Your drive to work tomorrow morning won't be a fun one.

Justin, it is hard to say. If school did get cancelled I believe it will have to be called an Ice Day rather than a Snow Day.

Candice, I am pretty sure the cancellation at NIU strictly had to do with the security threat.

Looks like the NWS upgraded to an ice storm warning. This could get real serious. Stock up now people.
