White Christmas Percentages

This is strictly historically speaking. As we've mentioned before, since records have been kept Rockford typically witnesses a white Christmas 50% of the time. As the graphic to the left shows, northern portions of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and North Dakota see a white Christmas 75% of the time. On the other hand, Omaha, Des Moines, Peoria, Champaign, Indianapolis, and Detroit see a white Christmas only 25% of the time.

Right now we have a pretty decent snowpack with approximately three inches of snow on the ground in Winnebago County. It shouldn't budge from that mark this weekend, but by the middle of the next work week it appears likely that our temperatures our going to be heading above the freezing mark. If the statistics hold true, last Christmas was a brown one, which means we should get a white Christmas this year. Time will tell... -ADAM

In my yard, it's not a snow pack --it's an ice pack :-)

And how long have records been kept? I'm curious how far back those percentages are based on.

Renee, you are right about the ice pack. Not real conducive to sledding outside unless you are into the "X Games". Most record keeping across the upper Midwest began between 1890-1910. Roughly 100 years of records.

My only Christmas wish is to have a white Christmas!! My new husband and I were married on Dec 1st, yes the worst winter storm we can remember. We LOVE winter and certainly got everything winter has to offer in one day. So we are really hopeing for a snow strom just as BIG for Christmas!! We're counting on you Eric and Adam!!
Merry Christmas

Congratulations Dave and AnnMarie! We're monitoring a warming trend that will take us right up to Christmas. Let's hope we don't melt all of our snow away between now and then.

Have a great night! -ERIC

3 inches, eh?

Hmm, according to my trusty dusty ruler we have considerably more than that in my corner of that mitten-shaped state to your north. (7.2 inches)

Does that mitigate my "vote" on the probability of a white Christmas? (I guessed 80% - 100% in your poll.)

What are the odds of us still having a white xmas. I have a feeling this snow will be melted by then and us being in the 50s on xmas. I know I am overexaggerating there. What do u think the odds are eric. Any chance of us seeing any more snow for xmas.

To be honest, I don't see much out there. Forecasting beyond seven days is often a crapshoot, but the GFS model is inidicating a possible storm system for December 25/26. Other than perhaps a 1-3 incher next week, things look pretty quiet. -ERIC
