As I've mentioned before, January is typically the coldest month of the year. The coldest our average high temperature gets is 27 degrees and it stays at that level from January 2nd to the 26th. The coldest our average low temperature gets is 10 degrees and it stays at that level from January 10th through the 21st. That being said, if there is ever going to be an arctic outbreak of frigid air it is going to happen this time of year. Therefore, when temperatures fall below zero this weekend we shouldn't be too upset or shocked.To those with an optimistic mindset, in a week or two our average temperatures will start going up again! -ADAM

I've always been curious about why there is such a big lag between day length (and sun angle) and the cold weather. In November, we have days as short as those in February, but Feb is so much colder than December.
Or is it just my imagination? Are the temp changes symmetric on either side of the winter solstice?
Renee: The winter solstice (around Dec 21) is the shortest day of the year. However the coldest temperatures right here midway up in the Northern Hemisphere don't occur for several weeks after.

Are we still expecting 2-5 inches of snow, or is it less. I guess any kind of snow cover will really drop our temps.
